You mention a 2017 study which found that "ouch" and "shh" were rated as very iconic.

I believe "sh" is onomatopoeic for the noise of blood rushing through arteries...

I went to a talk by Dr Harvey Karp, author of "Happiest Baby On The Block". He had developed a technique called the "5 Ss" to help soothe a crying baby: swaddle, side, sush, sway, suck. Swaddling, sushing and swaying all mimic the baby's experience in the womb where it's cramped, the noise of blood through the mother's arteries is loud, and the baby is swayed while the mother walks. There are lots of funny videos on the internet about the "hair dryer hack" since it makes a similar "sh" sound -- there's a crying baby, and you bring a hairdryer close and the baby stops crying, then you pull the hairdryer away and the baby starts crying again, over and over again.
